Tips for Taking Care of Your Travertine Deck

Travertine Pavers can improve the appearance of your deck and make it more conducive to hosting parties and relaxing. The elegance of travertine is unmatched by other materials commonly used for decks, such as wood. Travertine decks are a good way to increase your home’s appeal and value. It may be durable and guaranteed to last for generations, but you must take certain steps to ensure that it can last beyond a lifetime and to preserve its quality. Here are some tips for caring for your travertine deck:

  1. Clean your deck routinely You should clean your travertine deck at least once a year in order to keep it in good condition. Rinse the dirt off with clean water. A pressure washer should be able to remove excess dirt. Alternatively, use a soft-bristled brush to remove the dirt.

  1. Use a specially formulated stone cleaner when necessary – Avoid harsh cleaners like bleach and those with harsh chemicals because they can damage the stone. To determine how your cleaner will affect travertine, test a small section of the deck first.

  1. If you seal travertine pavers, your deck will always look new. If they were not sealed by the supplier, do this. Apply a small amount of water to the pavers’ surfaces to determine if they need to be sealed. When the tile absorbs the water and darkens, it needs to be sealed. To decide which sealant to use (water-based or petroleum-based), determine the porosity, density, and finish of the travertine paver. Ask your supplier for a recommendation.

  1. Before attempting to remove a stain, identify it – Most surface stains can be removed with the correct commercial or household cleaning product. To get the best results, identify what type of stain it is to know what cleaning method to use. Start by wiping up excess oil as soon as it spills, or chip it off if it has hardened, before using a gentle liquid cleaner (e.g. household detergent, acetone, mineral spirits) to clean the affected area. Clean the stone with a soft cloth rather than directly applying the cleaner. Wet a piece of cloth and place it over the stained spot to allow the cloth to absorb the oil.
